Self Portrait In Progress; personal critique.
-So far I am very pleased with my self portrait. It has taken me in many different directions than I initially thought it would. My inspiration is Velazquez, Goya, and Picasso. I want to show myself as an artists, thus I looked at Las Menias (by Velazquez) because of the inclusion of himself within the royal portrait. He is gazing at the viewer inviting them into the space and his life as a royal court painter to Phillip IV. Goya looked at this and also included himself in Carlos IV's royal portraits. Picasso's many versions of Las Meninas is a great reference for me because it is pieced together, much like a collage (the medium of my piece). This provides an abstraction that is very similar to my ideals in art. Me; a realist and abstraction-ist: in many different ways. I feel my self portrait is successful because of the different visual textures and combination of two opposing ideals in art. Also, I really need to work on including other types of color as well as varying the size of pieces that make up my facial composition. I feel that if I work on these things, I should have a very successful piece.
