The Art Spirit by Robert Henri quote: "Art; when really understood is the province of every human being. It is simply a question of ding things, anything, well. It is not an outside, extra thing..."
-I really enjoyed this quote and agree with what he said. I would like to pick up a copy of the book so I can fully understand his viewpoint in order to grasp a better understanding of mine. I think more people should be exposed to quotes like this because I feel the quote is easy to understand yet it still sends a great message. Whenever people don't 'understand' art, I always try to help them because like he said it 'is the province of every human being', wither they understand it or not. Also, a lot of people have a specific ideal of what art is and who it takes to be an artist, and honestly I agree with him that it is in the core of every person, sometimes it just takes more for it to be realized, and sometimes it is realized within different materials than typical art media.
(I then went on to ramble about how excited I am for this class and other things that I do personally to further myself as an artists.)
After listening to fellow students in the class, I realized that a lot of them had taken the quote in a very different way than I had originally thought about it. All too often, the opposing side (as I like to call it) was stuck on the word 'simply', and honestly I can see why- but really..it is quite simple. Being artistic doesn't necessarily mean Fine Art- it can really encompass anything. True, it takes more than just a 'simple' skill in order to create certain types of art, but denying the fact that someone is creative, just because they are not a painter or sculptor is lunacy. Robert Henri is right, it really 'is the province of every human being'. Trust me on this one.
